An Iowa man is being accused of using another person’s birth certificate to get an Iowa driver’s license and a U.S. passport.
According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, 43-year-old Abel Hernandez-Labra of Hampton, Iowa was charged with passport fraud and false statements in a complaint filed Tuesday, July 15, 2014.
Hernandez-Labra has been accused of taking the identity of a U.S. citizen by using their birth certificate to get an Iowa driver’s license. According to the U.S. District Attorney’s Office, he used the victim’s name to apply for a passport in 2008.
The complaint filed Tuesday alleges that when investigating agents confronted Hernandez-Labra, he completed a written sworn statement that is believed to contain several material false statements, said the district attorney.
Hernandez-Labra appeared in federal court in Cedar Rapids and was held without bond. His preliminary hearing was set for July 30, 2014 at 4 p.m.
