Nearly one-fifth of the deceased people, still on Iowa’s eligible voter lists, were residents of counties in and around the Quad Cities.
The Iowa Secretary of State’s Office periodically compares the Social Security Death Index to voter rolls to find possible deceased voters. The last time they did the comparison in Iowa was in 2012.
“It’s important that our voter lists are accurate and this routine check of information in the Social Security Death Index will help county auditors determine which voters are deceased and should no longer be on the voting rolls,” Iowa Secretary of State Matt Schultz said.
Schultz’s office determined Scott County may have 55 deceased people who are still listed as eligible voters. Muscatine County had 91 such voters listed, Louisa County had 19, Jackson County had 16, Des Moines County had 12, Henry County had 12, Cedar County had 9, Clinton County had 8, Washington County had 8 and Lee County had 6.
Schultz’s office sent a letter to county auditors asking them to analyze the 2014 list of 1,234 Iowans identified as likely being deceased, to be sure those individuals are removed from their lists of eligible voters.
County auditors were given until Wednesday, August 6, 2014, to cancel voter records for deceased voters.
