A contractor, who hit a water line and then shut water valves, reportedly cut water service to homes in the area of 53rd and Eastern in Davenport.

Iowa American Water customers near Easter Avenue, between 52nd and 54th streets, were without water Tuesday morning, July 15, 2014 according to a spokesperson for the utility.

“(A) contractor working in the area inadvertently hit and broke a water main at Eastern Avenue and 52nd Street in Davenport,” the spokesperson said.  “Without notifying Iowa American Water, the contractor’s personnel then proceeded to operate valves in the area to shut off the leak which, in turn, interrupted water service to about 200 residential and commercial customers.”

Service was restored by noon, but customers affected by the shut-down were under a precautionary boil water advisory.

Customers under the precautionary boil order included all residents on Stonegate Drive; the 5300 block of Spring Street; the 1600 to 1900 blocks of E. 54th Street; the 5100 to 5700 blocks of Eastern Avenue; the 1600 to 1900 blocks of 53rd Street and the address at 1430 E. 52nd Street.

An Iowa American Water crew was making repairs to the broken water main Tuesday afternoon.  Repairs were expected to be complete that same day, but the precautionary boil order would be effective until 4 p.m. Wednesday, July 16.
