How you can help three local food pantries

Demand is high and supply is low at area food pantries, but you can help.

Volunteers will collect non-perishable food as part of a community-wide food drive to help three local food pantries.

Items in high demand include canned fruit, canned vegetables and canned meat, as well as peanut butter, rice, pasta, pasta sauce, macaroni and cheese, juice boxes, boxed meals and soups.

The food drive, called Thanksgiving in July,  is a concentrated effort from Monday, July 14 through Saturday, July 19, 2014 to collect as much non-perishable food as possible for food pantries at Bettendorf Community Center, First Baptist Church and St. James Food Pantry.

Nearly 20% of all Scott County children under 18 don't have a secure source for regular, nutritious food in their homes.  Summer is especially important to food pantries, because it is a time when donations are usually low but demand is high.

“Food pantries spend up to $1,500 each month on purchasing perishable and non-perishable food items,” said Jeff Herzberg, Founding Member. “Our goal is to collect enough non-perishable food items to allow the pantries to use those funds for milk, eggs and other high protein, good-for-you products on a regular basis to their visitors.”

You can make a personal donation of food at the HyVee store on Devils Glen Road or at Fareway on Belmont in Bettendorf.  Food will also be collected Saturday, July 19, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Faye's Field parking lot, near the Family museum in Bettendorf.

Personal checks are also welcome.  Make the check out to Thanksgiving in July and send or deliver it to Northwest Bank at 2550 Middle Road, Bettendorf, Iowa 52722.
