Neighbors were warned to avoid the area after wastewater bubbled up out of a manhole in a neighborhood near Pebble Creek Golf Course in LeClaire, Iowa.

A resident was the first to report the wastewater discharge, near Cobblestone Lane and 195th Street, Wednesday morning, July 9, 2014.

The discharge likely began after routine maintenance was performed on pumps, the day before the leak was found, according to the Iowa Department of Natural Resources.

“An unknown amount of wastewater has discharged, flowing overland towards a tributary of Spencer Creek,” said a statement from the DNR.

City workers poured lime in the area around the manhole.

Residents were warned to keep children and pets away from the area of the spill, and the creek. for 24 to 48 hours.
