Volunteer turns his love for golf into opportunity

A man who volunteers each year at the John Deere Classic says he loves how close his role gets him to the action on the course.

A man who volunteers each year at the John Deere Classic says he loves how close his role gets him to the action on the course.

Bob Beyer has spent seven years traveling, at his own expense, from central Illinois to volunteer at the John Deere Classic.

Beyer said his favorite job is serving on the Caddies' Committee, where he collects the bibs, tears the names off the back and orders them for the next day.

"You get in on some of the interviews, (like those) on the back side of this trailer - from the Golf Channel and from you guys, and you get a little insight into what the players have to say," Beyer said.

Beyer said there's no substitute for the up-close-and-personal view volunteering offers.
