The former business manager for Mid-Prairie School District was accused of felony theft in connection with thousands of dollars charged to her employee credit card.

District officials conducted an internal investigation after discovering “possible financial irregularities” in June 2014, according to the Kalona News. The investigation later included the Washington County, Iowa Sheriff’s Department and the Iowa State Auditor’s Office.

Cindy Steege, 41, was charged with one count of second-degree theft in connection with the case. The accusation stems from $8,000 in charges made to her Mid-Prairie Community School District employee credit card.

Steege left her position June 12, 2014 after serving several years as the shared business manager for the Mid-Prairie and Keota community school districts.

Court records show Steege was arrested Tuesday, July 8, 2014 and was released in lieu of $5,000 bond.
