Preparing for a week of golf at Deere Run in Silvis, in an interview with PGA, Iowa native Zach Johnson shared his excitement for returning home to a community that he calls thirsty for golf.
Johnson won the tournament in 2012, and was edged out by 19-year-old Jordan Spieth in 2013 when the two competed against David Hearn in multiple playoff holes.
The Cedar Rapids, Iowa native said the week of the JDC is one that he really looks forward to as well as his family and friends. He describes Deere Run as a course that he enjoys and respects.
“Growing up here, this place is golf thirsty,” Johnson said. “It just seems like there’s about a seven month period where it just wants a big drink of golf and this is one way to provide that.”
Johnson commented that being a board member of the tournament, he sees how hard the volunteers and organizers work to put on the event. He also commented that while the QC isn’t necessarily a small community, it’s one that really appreciates golf and enriches the game.
