A 64-year-old Wapello, Iowa man and a 22-year-old Illinois man died when the vehicles they were driving collided head-on along Highway 61.

A report from Iowa State Police said Richard and Ruth Bryant were traveling southbound in a pickup truck, pulling a utility trailer, when a northbound 2007 Honda Civic crossed the center line and into their lane just before 4:30 p.m. Sunday, July 6, 2014.

Police said both drivers tried to avoid the crash by swerving toward the shoulder along the southbound lane, where they collided head-on just north of Grandview, Iowa.

Richard Bryant died at the scene of the crash; his passenger, Ruth Bryant, was airlifted by a hospital in Iowa City.

The driver of the Civic, 22-year-old Daniel Johnson of Naperville, Illinois, was also airlifted to a hospital in Iowa City where he later died.  Police said Johnson may have been trying to pass another vehicle as the wreck happened.
