A jail escapee was captured after he was spotted driving a stolen car in Maquoketa.
On June 16, 2014 a Jackson County Jail inmate, 32-year-old Brandon Bodenhofer, escaped from a deputy when being returned to jail after a court appearance.
According to the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office, on Saturday, July 5, 2014 shortly before 7 p.m., a deputy saw Bodenhofer driving a “stolen car in a reckless manner” and tried to stop him. Bodenhofer fled “at a high rate of speed” heading southbound on S. Main Street, leaving Maquoketa.
Deputy Russ Long, the officer who originally tried to stop Bodenhofer, and Sgt. Darin Risinger went after the escapee for nearly two miles when Bodenhofer drove into a ditch, striking a barbed-wire fence near 1st Street and the Jackson and Clinton county line, according to the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office.
Police said Bodenhofer tried to flee on foot, but the officers caught him.
Bodenhofer was charged with felony attempting to elude, operating without owners consent, driving while barred, unlawful possession of a prescription drug, and reckless driving and speeding, said a spokesperson from the sheriff’s office. He also had numerous outstanding arrest warrants from when he escaped.
He was being held in the Jackson County Jail.
