Two Rock Island homes caught fire on the 4th of July.
According to the Rock Island Fire Department a fire that started on the porch of a two-and-a-half story duplex in the 700 block of 23rd Street around 12:30 p.m. spread to some of the rest of the home.
Upon arrival, crews found heavy fire on the three-sided wraparound porch, said a spokesperson from the department. Firefighters were able to quickly put out the fire but some of the front windows broke because of the heat. Everyone got out safely.
There was serious damage to the front porch and minor damage on the inside. Both sides of the duplex were damaged by smoke. The fire damage was estimated at $35,000. Smoke damage was about $15,000.
Crews were on scene for about two hours before heading to their second house fire of the day in the 1200 block of 20th Street.
An attic fan caught fire around 4:30 p.m. and crews saw fire coming out of the attic windows and smoke showing from the rest of the roof.
The fire was contained to the attic area but the first and second floors sustained smoke and water damage. Fire damage has been estimated to be $40,000 and smoke damage at $10,000.
There were no injuries.
Crews were on scene for about two hours there as well.
