Rep. Cheri Bustos, (D) Illinois and Republican challenger Bobby Schilling don't find much common ground. But they do agree that Bob McDonald seems to be the right guy to turn around the VA.

"We need somebody who is going to oversee the VA system, who understands patient service and gets the efficiency part of it down," Rep. Bustos said.

"He brings some true leadership," added Schilling, who was defeated by Bustos in 2012. "Somebody that can really work hard to make sure that the veterans get the care that they not only deserve but need."

McDonald is a West Point graduate and former chief executive for Procter & Gamble. His business know-how and military experience will be crucial.

The beleaguered VA must bounce back from a series of missteps concerning care and administration.

Finding a new leader for the VA is just the start. The nomination begins a new era of oversight to correct the flawed national policies.

The Bettendorf location joins the Iowa City VA Hospital to improve access to care. With expansion plans in the works, the local clinic is part of the solution.

It's something that sparks rare bipartisan agreement.

"I think the number one priority right now with the VA is to allow the veterans to go to any hospital in their local communities," Schilling said.

"We've got to do our best to make sure we're regaining the confidence of our veterans," Bustos concluded.

It's a chance to find common ground in order to fix the broken VA system.
