Law enforcement departments in the State of Illinois will be keeping extra watch out for driving violations during the month of July.

Illinois State Police (ISP) District 14 in McDonough County and the ISP District 7 will be conducting Roadside Safety Checks, according to the district captains.

Officers will be out watching for drivers transporting open alcoholic beverages, driving under the influence, or driving with a suspended or revoked license.

“Alcohol and drug impairment is a significant factor in nearly 40 percent of all fatal motor vehicle crashes in Illinois,” said a spokesperson from the ISP. “[Roadside Safety Checks] are designed to keep our roads safe by taking dangerous DUI offenders off the road.”

The project is funded by the Illinois Department of Transportation, Division of Traffic Safety.

State Troopers in District 14, which includes Fulton, Hancock, Henderson, and Warren Counties in addition to McDonough County, will be out targeting drivers violating what police call the “Fatal Four violations.” Those include driving under the influence, speeding, not wearing seatbelts, and distracted driving.

“Everyone plays an important part in traffic safety,” said District 14 Safety Education Officer, Trooper Dan Hill. “You can do your part by obeying the posted speed limit, wearing your seatbelt, putting the cell phone down and if you are going to consume alcoholic beverages, use a designated driver.”

Hill also reminded drivers to slow down and move over for emergency vehicles on the side of the road.
