Lawmakers are pushing to ensure that people with disabilities are able to fill up their gas tanks with no problems.
Illinois Congresswoman Cheri Bustos was in Moline Friday, June 27, 2014 to introduce the Refueling Assistance Act. The bill ensures that disabled travelers can gas up with the same ease that able-bodied drivers have.
“Refueling your car to go to work or run errands should be safe and convenient for all drivers,” said Bustos. “But for far too many individuals with disabilities, a simple trip to the local gas station can be a lengthy and dangerous ordeal.”
The Act would have the U.S. Secretary of Transportation research the efficiency and safety of the assistance that people receive at gas pumps. From there, recommendations will be made on fixing the issues and penalties would be developed for violators.
According to guidance from the Department of Justice, disabled drivers are supposed to honk their horn to get assistance from a gas station attendant.
