A new poll shows Iowa voters disapprove of the way President Barack Obama is doing his job, and of how the administration handled the prisoner exchange for Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl.
Results were released the week of June 23 from a poll conducted by Quinnipiac University between June 12 and 16, 2014.
The poll results showed the margin narrowed between supporters of Hillary Clinton and those who back New Jersey Governor Chris Christie. A March survey of independent voters in Iowa showed Clinton led Christie by 48-to-35 percent in March 2014, and Clinton’s lead dropped to 44 percent, versus 36 percent for Christie, in June.
Forty percent of surveyed Iowa voters approve of the job President Obama is doing, while 55 percent disapproved of his work. Those results are similar to the results of the March poll, and opinions were cast heavily along party lines; Democrats gave the president an 85% approval rating and Republicans gave him a 5% approval rating.
The divide also appeared to be along party lines over the administration’s decision to release five Taliban prisoners in exchange for Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl. Iowa Republicans disapproved of the action 83 to 14 percent, while Iowa Democrats approved of the exchange 60 to 26 percent, the poll said. Overall, Iowa voters disapproved of the decision, with 55 disapproving and 34 percent approving of the exchange.
