Geneseo's Park District is moving forward with plans to build a new swimming pool in the same spot as the current one and possibly expand it into the neighboring power plant's front yard.

In a meeting last night, the Geneseo Park District learned that the power plant would not need tat front lawn space if they decide to expand in the future; so it might be  available for the Park District to use.

A decision should be made on that during the City Council meeting on July 8.

Molly Hamer, Executive Director of the Geneseo Park District, said safety won't be an issue at the new swimming pool even with its proximity to the power plant. The current pool is right next door and they've never had any problems.

"We've been here for over 60 years. A new pool in this spot wold actually be safer than the current pool," said Hamer.

The Park District sent out surveys and questionnaires to the community to get their input on the project, and has gotten a lot of good feedback.

"We were told by the community that they were very interested in a zero depth entry, interactive water play, a splash pad, a new and improved bath house, a family changing room, and enhanced concessions," said Hamer.

Hamer also said the community wanted more space for lap swim, a deep well, and water slides.

The project is estimated to cost around $6.5 million. The Park District hopes to break ground, pending future approvals, in August, 2015 and finish by May, 2016.
