Private school leaders in the city of Davenport met Tuesday, June 24, 2014 to discuss what time their students should start school for the 2014-2015 year.

On June 9, 2014 Davenport Community Schools decided to change their start times for next year. That has also affected the private schools in the city because both use the same transportation system.  Assumption, for instance, could see their start time moved from 7:40 a.m. to around 8:10 a.m. for the upcoming school year.

St. Paul the Apostle started at 8:10 a.m. during the 2013-2014 school year. Next year, they're supposed to start around 8:45 a.m. In the past two weeks though, the private schools have looked at whether they could start the elementary schools at an earlier time slot.

A spokeswoman for Davenport Community Schools said she knows of no further conversations between the two groups, at this time.

After the Tuesday meeting, Assumption President Andy Craig said the private schools face two options:  First was to go along with the schedule changes Davenport Schools make, which would push start times later for all five private schools; or leave the start times alone and continue the same schedule as in previous school years.

Craig said the school board presidents from the five private schools in Davenport must reach a unified decision about school start times.  He hoped to gather representatives from Assumption, Trinity Lutheran, JFK, All Saints and St. Paul the Apostle schools, along with diocesan superintendent Lee Morrison, to meet and make their decision - hopefully - before the July 4 Independence Day holiday.
