A QC 5k that benefits children diagnosed with autism set three records, including record attendance.
There were about 750 walkers and runners at the Royal Ball Run for Autism on Saturday, June 21, 2014. The 5k walk and race raises money for autism awareness and local programs to help families in need.
“The CDC is estimating that 1 in 68 children are diagnosed with autism right now, but the resources and awareness have not caught up to that,” said race organizer Jennifer Hartmann. “We’re very excited to see this kind of turnout to help those families feel more supported.”
The other two records were in the running. The male winner finished the race in 16:29 – which is nearly one minute faster than the old record of 17:25. The female winner crossed the finish line in 17:21 – shattering the previous record of 21 minutes.
Hartmann said they hoped to present a check to Augustana Speech and Language Therapy program for $15,000.
