A Davenport teacher has been selected as the runner who will race for the Rhythm City Casino Jackpot during the 2014 Bix 7.

Lifelong Quad Citian, Kathy Schmitt was chosen to race for the $2,500 jackpot on Saturday, July 26. She was selected among all entries that were received by June 15.

Here’s how it works- Schmitt will get a head start based on her past efforts. If she beats the first elite runner to the finish line, then the $2,500 from Rhythm City Casino is hers.

When race director Ed Froehlich told Schmitt that she was chosen, she said it came as quite the surprise.

“I had to sit down I was so shocked, I’m just a normal every-day runner,” Schmitt said. “I told Ed. ‘I’m old, I don’t think I can race the pros.’ He told me not to worry and that he would be kind to me on a starting spot.”

Schmitt is a 25-year veteran of the Davenport Community School District, where she teaches third grade.

“All my current and former students will be excited I’m sure when they hear the news,” Schmitt said.

2014 is the 40th anniversary of the run. Registration is open online – click here. Entry is free for all active military, a printed application and military ID is required. Click here for the application.
