Democrat and State Senator Jack Hatch says Cedar Rapids councilwoman Monica Vernon will be his running mate in the race to become the next governor of Iowa.

Hatch made the announcement in Cedar Rapids on Tuesday, June 17, 2014.

Vernon is founder and past president of a market research firm called Vernon Research Group. She served as chairwoman and vice chairwoman of the Cedar Rapids City Planning Commission before becoming a councilwoman. She is currently in her second term on the council and is the mayor pro tempore.

Vernon changed her party affiliation from Republican to Democrat in May 2009.

Hatch and Vernon were expected to make several public appearances across Iowa in advance of the state’s Democratic Party convention set for Saturday, June 21, 2014.
