Rescue crews recovered the body of an Iowa City man from a lake west of the Quad Cities.

The WCF Courier of Cedar Rapids reported that shortly before 5 p.m. Saturday, June 14, 2014, while he was with a group of friends and family 36-year-old Somphaeng Syvixay jumped into Coralville Lake off a pontoon boat and never resurfaced.

A report by CBS2 Iowa indicated that two swimmers were struggling in the water. The people on the pontoon were able to pull one swimmer up, but couldn’t find Syvixay.

The Department of Natural Resources spent hours searching for Syvixay and the Army Corps of Engineers confirmed that his body was recovered at 8:50 p.m., according to the WCF Courier.

Captain Shawn Meier said Syvixay had “voluntarily jumped off” with intentions of swimming to “what is known as Divers Point,” according to the WCF Courier. Meier said the people Syvixay was with "lost sight of him" when he went under water.
