Two people died and three more were hurt when they tried to retrieve a cell phone dropped into an open-pit toilet.

The young woman accidentally dropped her brand new phone when she used an open-pit toilet in China on Wednesday, June 4, 2014 according to the South China Morning Post.

The woman’s husband jumped in to find the phone, but he lost consciousness in the knee-deep sewage. His mother jumped in to try to save the man but she, too, lost consciousness. The young woman also went into the cesspit and also passed out.

The young woman’s father-in-law and two neighbors, who also went into the cesspit, also fainted.

Villagers used a rope to pull all six people out of the pit.

The husband and mother-in-law later died at a hospital. A doctor reportedly said the victims suffocated.

The young woman, her father-in-law and a neighbor were hurt.
