A motorist told police he was stopped by someone impersonating a police officer in rural Galena, Illinois.

A motorist told police he was stopped by someone impersonating a police officer in rural Galena, Illinois.

The man reported being stopped by a vehicle with red and blue flashing lights at about 4:30 a.m. Sunday, June 8, 2014 as he was westbound on U.S. Highway 20 near Williams Drive.

The victim told police a black man, who wore a sidearm in a holster, approached his car.  When the alleged officer did not show the victim an identification, the victim said he drove away.

"Moments later the citizen found a Galena police officer and reported the incident," the police report said.

Police said the suspect vehicle was a black Buick Century with an Iowa license plate and red and blue lights in the grille.  The report said the man who made the traffic stop was wearing a black shirt and blue jeans.
