Black Hawk College is opening up its new Adult Learning Center on Thursday, June 5, 2014.
Black Hawk College had to move due to the potential Wal-Mart store going in at the Watchtower Plaza. BHC had used the Watchtower Plaza since 1999.
The new Adult Learning Center sits just to the west of 11th Street and Blackhawk Road. The new building is 14,000 square feet, with six classrooms, three computer labs, and a testing room for students to use. The building sits just to the west of the new State Farm building that's at the site.
There is no word on when construction would start or finish on the new Wal-Mart. City leaders previously said, the store would not open in 2014. Residents have also raised concerns about the timetable for the Wal-Mart project.
The city plans on selling the old Watchtower Plaza site to Wal-Mart developers for $4.5 million, once demolition is complete. On Monday, June 2, the Rock Island City Council approved a major demolition project for the plaza.
