Police say thieves may have been after personal information by stealing trash set out for pickup along curbs in Knox County, Illinois.

The sheriff’s office confirms receiving several reports from residents reporting someone taking trash set out for pickup in Orange and Hawk Creek townships.  One witness reported seeing an older model red passenger car leaving the area where the trash was taken.

“Taking trash that has been set out curbside/roadside for pickup is not a theft under Illinois law,” said a statement from the Knox County Sheriff’s Office.  “However, trash is often taken to obtain personal, bank and credit card information for fraudulent purposes.”

They urge you to ensure proper disposal of any documents that contain personal or financial information to help protect yourself against such theft.

Anyone with information about recent curbside trash thefts is asked to contact the Knox County Sheriff’s Department at (309) 345-3733.
