After chasing a stolen vehicle down Highway 61, police discovered that the driver was a Department of Corrections escapee.
A spokesperson from the Blue Grass Police Department said that on Sunday, June 1, 2014 around 4 p.m. an off-duty officer started following a stolen vehicle. A Blue Grass Sergeant caught up to the vehicle, which was heading toward Muscatine on Highway 61.
While being pursued by police, the vehicle turned around and started heading toward Scott County, police said.
“During the pursuit in Scott County, the suspect vehicle nearly hit three vehicles,” said a spokesperson from the police. “The Blue Grass Police Sergeant ended the pursuit by conducting a pit maneuver.”
Police said the suspect vehicle was stopped when it hit an exit sign. At that point, the driver got out of the vehicle and led the Sergeant on a shorty foot chase, where the driver, Brennen Smith, a reported DOC escapee was then arrested.
DOC online records show Smith was moved from prison to a work release facility in February 2014 to complete a sentence for drug charges. He was scheduled to be released May 3, 2015.
Smith was taken into custody on the warrant for being an escapee. Police said additional charges were pending.
Smith’s passenger also faces charges according to police. Nobody was injured.
