Centennial Bridge repairs to take several months, will close for 35 days

The Centennial Bridge will be closed for more than a month during a several-month long construction project.

The Centennial Bridge will be closed for more than a month during a several-month-long construction project.

A spokesperson from the Bi-State Regional Commission said that from June to October 2014 crews will be making repairs on the Centennial Bridge, which includes transverse beam replacements.

The bridge will be completely closed for 35 days from July 28th – September 5th.  At all other times during the several months of work traffic may be down to one lane in each direction.

Planning Director of the Bi-State Regional Commission, Gena McCullough, said that the repairs were scheduled as a proactive means to prevent future problems.

“We’ve seen the experience of other communities that have had catastrophic bridge failures and so making sure that we’re doing the repairs in a timely fashion so that they’ll continue to carry the traffic that we have today and the future is very important,” McCullough said.

During the construction and closure times, drivers are encouraged to allow extra travel time, as more traffic consumes the I-74 and Government bridges. It was also recommended that travelers avoid driving during peak traffic times: 6:30 a.m. – 8:30 a.m. and 3 p.m. – 5:30 p.m.
