It’s on many “must-do” lists for visitors to Chicago, but some tourists from California had quite a scare when a glass Ledge at the Willis Tower appeared to crack beneath their feet.

The glass box is one of four that extend out 4.3 feet from the Skydeck on the 103rd floor of the iconic building. They offer long, wide and straight-down views of Chicago from 1,353 feet in the air.

After Alejandro Garibay and his family posed for a photo on the Ledge, the bottom of the glass box appeared to crack beneath their feet just before 10 p.m. Wednesday, May 28, 2014.

A spokesman for Willis Tower said it was the scratch-resistant protective coating, and not the actual glass, that cracked according to WGN-TV.

“This coating does not affect the structural integrity of The Ledge in any way. Occasionally, the coating will crack, as it is designed to in order to protect the surface of the glass,” said Willis Tower spokesman Brian Rehme.

One of the four Ledge platforms was covered and roped off to visitors the morning after the incident.
