Sterling Police say they captured a man who appeared in surveillance video as he allegedly stole items from two different businesses.

Police say 36-year-old Matthew Kornewald stole a Dewalt Drill, valued at $224.99, from Frary Lumber on Friday, May 16, 2014; and that he also stole a 46-inch television valued at $998 Thursday, May 22nd from the Super Wal-Mart on Lincolnway.  In both cases, surveillance cameras captured video of the alleged thefts.

Investigators say they caught up with Kornewald and arrested him at a Burger King in Rock Falls just before 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 27, 2014.

Kornewald was charged with two counts of burglary in connection with the Frary Lumber and Wal-Mart incidents.  Police said Kornewald also had two outstanding warrants in Whiteside County and one outstanding warrant in Lee County.

After he was booked into the Whiteside County Jail, Kornewald was given a notice to appear on all of his Whiteside County charges before he was released to Lee County authorities for their warrant.

Lee County online court records showed Kornewald was also charged in connection with an alleged retail theft that happened May 17 in Lee County.  Jail records confirm Kornewald was held in the Lee County Jail.  His bond for the outstanding warrant there was $3,000.
