Police say a 19-year-old driver tried to steal a red light camera after he crashed into it.

Manuel Montano Herrera of Marysville, California was arrested after police said his truck hit a traffic pole just after 6:30 a.m. Saturday, May 24, 2014.

Police said the camera and pole fell into the bed of Herrera’s blue Toyota pickup truck, and that Herrera then drove away from the scene of the crash.

A witness snapped a photo when Herrera stopped to adjust the items in his truck bed, about two miles from the wreck location, according to KXTV.

Police reportedly found Herrera trying to get rid of the camera at a friend’s house. Police said Herrera told them he left the scene of the crash because he was running late for work.

Police recovered the camera, and estimated repairs would cost around $2,000. Herrera was charged with hit and run and grand theft.
