Davenport Mayor Bill Gluba is heading to Colon, Mexico on Thursday, May 22, 2014 to seek trading opportunities with the city.

This is the back-end of a trip that began five months ago. In December of 2013, Colon officials met Gluba at City Hall to present different economic opportunities. Now, Mayor Gluba is traveling to Colon to discuss the same things.

Both sides are exploring  the possibility of a future trade mission, but the plan is not in effect yet. Colon's economy is partly based on agriculture. The city is located in the central part of the country.

"The mayor of Colon has the same challenges that I do as the mayor of Davenport," Gluba said on December 7, 2013. "That's to keep people working, expanding our employment base and to educate our people to compete in a world economy."

Gluba is traveling with Quad Cities Chamber of Commerce CEO Tara Barney. They will return Monday, May 26, 2014 around 10 p.m.

The trip is being paid for by the Sister Cities Committee. It is not being paid for through taxpayer dollars. Saint Ambrose University is also in support of the trip.
