Illinois Route 96 was blocked in Hancock County, Illinois when a tractor-trailer overturned after colliding with a car.

The tractor trailer was southbound on Illinois Route 96 when the driver of a southbound car, traveling in front of the rig, slowed down to make a left turn just after 10 a.m. Wednesday, May 21, 2014 on Illinois Route 96 north of CR 650 North in Hancock County.

Police said the driver of the tractor-trailer thought the car was turning right instead of left, so the trucker moved left to try to pass the slowing car.

When the car turned left, it was hit on the driver’s side by the tractor-trailer which then overturned.

The woman driving the car, and a 10-month-old passenger, were taken by ambulance to a hospital for evaluation.

Police said the trucker was not hurt.  Everyone involved wore seat belts at the time of the crash.

Illinois Route 96 was temporarily closed to traffic just after 3:30 p.m. from Hancock County Road 550 North to County Road 900 North, so crews could remove the overturned truck.  The road was expected to be reopened before 6 p.m.
