Site preparation and interior work began in late April 2014 for the first phase of the remodel, which will involve tearing down areas that formerly housed Sears and the mall’s food court.

Exterior demolition began Tuesday, May 20, 2014.  Demolition starts with the former Sears building and will continue for several weeks as crews tear down the food court.  More than 250,000 square feet will be removed.

“The end result will be a new, invigorating shopping experience complete with additional retailers as well as an enhanced experience and new amenities,” said a statement from the marketing manager for SouthPark’s owner, Macerich.

The remodeled mall will have new restrooms, better lighting and a commons area with wifi capabilities inside.  Outside, there will be new entrances, landscaping, and new signage.

All four anchor stores, JCPenney, Dillard’s, Younkers, and Von Maur will stay open throughout the construction.  Shoppers are encouraged to park in the lots near those stores to access the mall.

Phase I should be complete by November of 2014. Phase II, which involves building an on/off ramp with access to John Deere Expressway, is scheduled to start in 2015.
