Galesburg man dies as passenger of alleged intoxicated driver

Police say a Galesburg man died when the vehicle he was riding in crashed into a railroad overpass support.

Police say a Galesburg man died when the vehicle he was riding in crashed into a railroad overpass support.

The single-vehicle crash was reported in the 400 block of McClure Street, where the road goes under railroad tracks, at about 1 a.m. Friday, May 16, 2014.

Emergency workers extricated 23-year-old Albert Prater Jr., of Galesburg, from the wrecked vehicle.  Prater was taken to a local hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

Police said the driver of the vehicle, 24-year-old Bryan Vann, of Galesburg, fled the scene of the crash.  Vann was found at a home near the crash site and he was taken to a local hospital.

McVann was treated and released from the hospital and then arrested by Galesburg Police.

Police said Vann was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, aggravated driving under the influence of alcohol causing death, reckless homicide, failure to report an accident with death, failure to report an accident with injury, operating an uninsured motor vehicle and failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident.

Vann was held in the Knox County jail.
