Couple claims they found marijuana in a fast-food burger

A couple from Ottumwa, Iowa says they found marijuana in their McDonald’s hamburgers.

A couple from Ottumwa, Iowa says they found marijuana in their McDonald’s hamburgers.

The couple reported the incident to the Ottumwa Police Department on April 26, 2014 after buying the burgers from the drive-thru at the McDonald’s located at 222 Richmond Ave in Ottumwa, Iowa.

“A preliminary investigation of the hamburgers in question appears to have a plant substance on it consistent with possibly being marijuana,” said Lieutenant Jason Bell.

The substance found has been sent for forensic testing, but so far no one else has reported finding anything similar in their food.

“It's suspicious. It's something that's unusual and doesn't happen frequently and there have been no other reports. So why did this isolated incident occur? That's why we have to explore all options as part of the investigation,” said Bell.

Employees at the McDonald’s said they could not comment, but Bell says the fast-food chain is working with them and says they do have a suspect.

“Yes, there's one suspect. Police did identify one employee of the business that had some paraphernalia in his possession at the time but no charges have been filed and no arrests have been made as a result of that part of the investigation,” said Bell.

Bell says it could be a month before results of the forensic analysis of the substance are released.
