Two staff members were hurt during an altercation with an inmate at the Iowa State Penitentiary in Fort Madison at about 10:15 a.m. Monday, May 12, 2014.

“During routine movement a staff member gave an offender a directive which the offender failed to heed,” said a spokesperson for the prison.

The staff member repeated the instruction and was immediately assaulted by the inmate, the spokesperson said.

It took three other staff members to subdue the inmate.  Another inmate also came to the aid of the injured guard.

When it was over, two prison staff members were taken to a local hospital and two others were treated by medical staff at the prison.

The spokesperson did not name any of the people involved in the incident.

Inmate movement was restricted at the prison after the incident.
