A Quad City community is rallying around one of their own after learning that a three-year-old will need a heart transplant. Family and friends are stepping in to help.

Sometimes in life you have to deal with the cards you are dealt.

"I wouldn't say it's been easy, but it is what it is and as a person, as a mom, you just do what you have to do," said mom Meghan Kohn.

Even when those cards aren't always the best hand.

"Sometimes it's easier to focus on each day, rather than the whole long journey in itself and that kind of helps," said Meghan.

Three-year-old Will Kohn is a fun loving, energetic little boy who loves trucks.

"He's a lot more energetic than he's suppose to be, for someone going through all this," said Will's dad Chris Kohn.

Just looking at Will you would never be able to tell he's had not one open heart surgeries but three so far. Will was born with a rare heart defect. At just six days old he had his first open heart surgery and by eight months, he'd already has his third. Now Will is in need of a heart transplant.

"It becomes a waiting game to see when a heart becomes available that's right for him," said Chris

Chris Kohn is high school teacher and a coach at Pleasant Valley High school. Meghan Kohn had to quit her job to take of will.

"We always say when there's a will there's a way. It's kind of like our motto and I kind of think it fits," said Meghan.

A challenge they'll face like the rest so far, together.

With this surgery comes expenses so friends and family are throwing a benefit Sunday, May 18, 2014, from 1pm to 6pm at the Stern Center in Rock Island. Money raised will go towards helping pay for those expenses.
