Reports of a possible gunshot and a female who was screaming for help escalated into a standoff when police arrived to a home northwest of the Quad Cities in Durant, Iowa.

Officers arrived to the house on 8th Street around 11 p.m. Thursday, May 8, 2014 to find 42-year-old Scott Douglas Oetzel barricaded inside, according to Special Agent Richard Rahn from the Iowa Department of Public Safety.

Rahn said Oetzel used to live in the home. The female who lives there now had reportedly been screaming for help, and was assaulted by Oetzel. She was able to escape, but it is unclear when she got away.

Police said when officers made entry into the home they found that Oetzel had died from an “apparent self-inflicted shotgun wound.”

An autopsy was scheduled for Saturday, May 10.

The female was taken to an area hospital, treated and released.
