(CNN) — Oregon State University canned men’s basketball coach Craig Robinson, the brother of first lady Michelle Obama, on Monday, saying in a statement that the decision is in the best interests of the school.

A national search for a new coach has begun, Athletic Director Bob De Carolis said.

“I want to thank Coach Robinson and his family for their contributions to Oregon State University,” De Carolis said. “This was a difficult decision, but after further evaluation, I believe it is in the best interests of our student-athletes, our basketball program and our University.”

Robinson finished his sixth season coaching the Beavers this year. His overall record during that span was 94-105. Against Pac-12 Conference opponents, the record was 39-69, the university said.

Robinson was hired in 2008, the year his brother-in-law was elected president of the United States, after coaching two seasons at Brown University. He served as an assistant coach at Northwestern University for six years before arriving at Brown.
