A 72-year-old former firefighter reportedly died after he became trapped in a grain bin he was trying to clear on an Illinois farm.

Police said the man was working on the bin at Madey Farms in Genoa on Monday, May 5, 2014 because it had been clogged according to WTVO.

They later confirmed the man was Leon Madey.

A family member reportedly found Madey’s truck next to the bin, but could not find him. Madey was assumed to be inside the bin, and crews spent hours draining grain and searching for him according to the DeKalb, Illinois Daily Chronicle.

Firefighters cut large holes in the sides of the bin, to drain it, during their search for the man according to the Chronicle report.

Madey was a third-generation corn farmer, according to our sister station WGN-TV.
