The annual QC Police Memorial Service was held on Sunday, to honor local law enforcement officers who were killed in the line of duty.
The service began at Bethany Baptist Church in Moline, followed by a procession of police cars to the Justice Center in Rock Island where the memorial site is located.
This year, the service had a section honoring Sgt. Kevin Marxen from the Davenport Police Department, who died of a heart attack while running earlier this year.
The Quad Cities Law Enforcement Officers Memorial was built in 2001 and has, over the years, gotten some wear and tear.
That's why members of the memorial board are working to improve the site with a few alterations. Things like better landscaping, permanent seating, replacing the lights surrounding the memorial bricks, and an interactive touch screen monitor that would tell the stories of all 46 fallen officers.
"We want to make sure that it is a fitting memorial that is always something that is timeless and serves the needs of the officers in our community who have given the ultimate sacrifice," said Moline Police Department's Sergeant Terry Garmon.
"The officers' stories are all very unique and it ranges back from the 1800s to 2002 and so if we can tell that story and keep them alive through communicating what their contribution to society was then that's our goal," Garmon said.
Members of the board for the QC Law Enforcement Officers Memorial are holding an event at Pizza Ranch in Bettendorf on Monday, May 5th from 5-9 p.m. They will be serving pizza and drinks, ten percent of the sales that day will go toward improving the memorial site.
