A party that started with a mother telling her son “he could have some friends over” turned into a giant gathering with more than 1,500 teenagers inside the home.

CTV News reported that Friday, May 2, 2014 the party broke out in Brampton, Ontario. Police learned of the party from twitter, where party-goers had started the hashtag #MansionParty.

Officers said they visited the home prior to the party to warn the mother that it was being promoted as a party location, according to the report. Police said she told her son “he could have some friends over.”

A nearby neighbor said the son had informed them about the event that would take place later, saying “they were just going to have a small party.” But that neighbor said he was “shocked” when he saw the number of cars on the street and packs of people walking into the party.

Police said several complaints had come in about the noise, so when officers went back to that house they found about 200 cars parked up and down the street.

“There was a potential, a real potential for something to happen, something deadly,” Const. Thomas Ruttan told CTV.

One person who attended the party said windows were broken out of the home and it was “completely trashed.”

According to the report, several teens were arrested for infractions like underage drinking. There were no injuries reported. It was estimated that tens of thousands of dollars in damage were caused.
