The Iowa House of Representatives gave final approval to a measure that will ban the sale of electronic cigarettes and vapor products to people under the age of 18.
The measure passed the Iowa Senate by a 37-12 vote Monday, April 28, 2014. It passed the House by a vote of 74-23 the next day.
The bill adds to the state’s ban on cigarettes sold to or possessed by anyone under 18, so the ban will include “alternative nicotine products, or vapor products” including electronic cigarettes and the liquids used in them.
Retailers would also be required to have a permit to sell those products.
Possessing tobacco, e-cigarettes or vapor products could result in a fine of $50. Retailers caught selling to minors face penalties of $100 for a first offense, $250 for a second offense and $500 for a third or subsequent offense.
The bill was sent to Iowa Gov. Terry Branstad , who was expected to sign it into law. If that happens, the law would become effective July 1, 2014.
