Hundreds of thousands of batteries in 15 different baby monitor models have been recalled because they can overheat and rupture.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission says the rechargeable batteries in Summer Infant video monitors can pose a burn hazard. There have been at least 22 reports of overheated and ruptured batteries, including incidents of smoke and minor property damage.

The batteries were in baby monitors sold at mass merchants, specialty stores and online, including at Babies “R” Us stores, between February 2010 through the end of 2012.

“Consumers should remove the battery and contact Summer Infant for a replacement battery,” the CPSC said online.  “The monitor can continue to be used on AC power with the power cord.”

This recall follows a recall of nearly 59,000 rechargeable baby monitor batteries that were recalled in February 2011.
