Reaching out to a whole new age group, the Rock Island Library is offering library cards for brand new readers.

My First Library Card is a program launched to introduce children from birth to age six to all the available reading materials that libraries have to offer.

The Director of Children’s Services at the Rock Island Library, Sue Foster, said the program has generated a lot of interest. The goal is to encourage early literacy and getting kids used to the library.

“It’s a way to encourage parents to come in, get the books for the kids, reading reading reading, songs, music, play, any of that,” Foster said.

The program is also part of a five-year plan to get 75 percent of youth in the Rock Island/Milan area to get library cards.

As of Friday, April 18, 2014 more than 40 cards had already been doled out.
