An estimated 17,000 gallons of untreated sewage were released into the Mississippi River at LeClaire, Iowa.

The spill happened while work was being done on the wastewater treatment system there Friday, April 11, 2014 according to information from the Iowa Department of Natural Resources.

Crews were installing a lift station, which pumps sewage back into the plant for treatment, when the system was bypassed and the sewage was pumped into the Mississippi River.

“The bypass was stopped on Friday and the Iowa Department of Natural Resources was notified late Friday evening,” the DNR statement said.

DNR officials did not indicate whether there was any impact on wildlife or water quality downstream from the spill.
