A 25-year-old man from the Meskwaki Nation Settlement faces two counts of first-degree murder in connection with the death of his parents.

An indictment filed April 9, 2014, in federal court, alleges Gordon Lasley Jr., 25, killed is father, Gordon Lasley, Sr. and his mother, Kim Renee Lasley, “by striking them with a machete.”

Lasley Jr. was previously charged in Tama County after his brother reportedly found the couple dead in the basement of their home February 5, 2014.  The Tama County criminal complaint said the machete was found on a couch in the living room, and that Lasley Jr. had cut his own hands during the alleged attack.

Police said Lasley Jr. had told several family members he killed his parents.  He was later found driving a car registered to his mother.  The criminal complaint said there was blood on his clothes and in the car when he was found.

The federal indictment was filed April 9 in U.S. District Court in Cedar Rapids.  Lasley Jr. was arraigned in federal court Friday, April 11.

Lasley Jr. remained held without bond.  His trial in federal court was set for June 9.
