Police say they busted a guy smoking marijuana as he rode past a police officer near the courthouse in Dixon, Illinois.

The officer was walking from Dixon Police Headquarters, across West Third Street, to the Lee County Courthouse when a vehicle drove by with the window down.

“The officer immediately recognized the strong odor of cannabis and called for other units to catch up to the vehicle,” said a statement from Dixon Police Chief Danny Langloss.

Police stopped the vehicle in the 2000 block of West Fourth Street.  They said they found “cannabis and drug paraphernalia” in the vehicle.

“This also goes down as not one of the smartest things to do when driving past a police department,” said a spokesman for the Dixon Police Department.

Troy Harris, 38, of Rockford, Illinois was arrested and charged with misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia and misdemeanor possession of less than 2.5 grams of cannabis.
