The largest Easter egg hunt in Knox County took place today.

On Sunday, April 6th, 2014, more than 1,000 kids participated in Galesburg's 26th Annual Easter Egg Hunt.

12,000 eggs filled the grounds at the Lakeside Recreation Facility. Most of the eggs had candy in them, but a select few held bigger prizes like bicycles.

Organizers say the event is a great way to celebrate the holiday and the season.

"I think that it is really neat that it's a traditional thing that you probably did as a child and that I did as a child," says Elizabeth Varner, Recreation Supervisor for the City of Galesburg. "It was a free event and to be able to carry on that tradition so these kids can have an Easter egg hunt is wonderful.

"A lot of times when the economy is down, it's good to offer something free to everyone so I'm very happy that we can continue the tradition of an annual Easter egg hunt and let everyone in the commnity and surrounding area enjoy it."

Varner says HyVee sponsors the event with the help of small businesses in the Galesburg community.

"Everyone pulls together - businesses, HyVee, the Police Department, the kids. I love seeing the smiles on their faces."
