Driver dies after fiery Rock Island crash

A New Boston man died of injuries he suffered when the truck he was driving went off Highway 92, struck a tree and caught fire.

A New Boston man died of injuries he suffered when the truck he was driving went off Highway 92, struck a tree and caught fire.

Police said several other motorists stopped to help 60-year-old John Schmitt after the 1999 Ford Ranger he was driving left the roadway, crashed into a tree and caught fire at about 3 p.m. Wednesday, April 2, 2014.

Traffic was detoured as northbound lanes of Highway 92 were closed near 31st Avenue for several hours after the crash.

Schmitt was taken to a local hospital and later to a hospital in Iowa City where he died of injuries he suffered in the crash.
